On Friday, September 16, from 4-5 pm, MIT Professor of Mathematics Gigliola Staffilani presented “From Disorder to Order: How a Mathematician Sees Life and Work” about her research and her experience in mathematics to about 10 to 15 math students. On February 20 at 6 pm, GIIM invited Po-Shen Loh, head coach of the USA IMO team and founder of expii to discuss his views about inclusivity in math education. Dinner from Dumpling House was served! He talked at length about the importance of math education accessible to anyone.
On Wednesday, December 2, at 6 pm, Professor Jill Pipher, former president of the Association of Women in Mathematics, spoke about her experience as a leader of AWM and as a women in Brown’s math department. Thai food was served and around 10 people attended.
On Wednesday, October 28 from 6:30 – 7:30 pm, Kate Jenkins from Akamai will run a discussion about issues that women in math face. The event will be held in Emerson 108 and dinner will be provided. All genders and concentrations welcome!
On October 13 from 6 – 7 pm, Dartmouth Professor of Math Carolyn Gordon talked about her research “You can’t hear the shape of the drum” and address the importance of confidence for women in math. Dinner was provided. Around 10 – 15 students attended; here are some photos from the event.
